: To design and construct a retaining wall, the Engineer extracted an undisturbed cohesionless soil sample from the construction site. Why the engineer collected the undisturbed soil sample? Also discuss how the height of the soil retained and properties of cohesionless soil retained influences the calculation of lateral pressure of soil.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

These kinds of samples are used for testing the properties in laboratory, without disturbing its structure, texture, density, natural water content and stress condition are help in computing the compressibility, shear strength, and permeability of the soil.

We know that lateral pressure is given as

p = 0.5* (coefficient of earth pressure)* unit weight of soil * height of soil^2

Pressure is directly proportional to square of height of soil/wall.

Coefficient of pressure is dependent on phi values.

Ka= {1-sin(phi))}/{1+sin(phi)}

Ka*Kp=1

A design engineer wants to construct a sample mean chart for controlling the service life of a halogen headlamp his company produces. He knows from numerous previous samples that this service life is normally distributed with a mean of 500 hours and a standard deviation of 20 hours. On three recent production batches, he tested service life on random samples of four headlamps, with these results Sample Service Life (hours) 1 495 500 505 500 2 525    515   ...

Case Abstract: Company ABC, an AE, constructor and construction management firm, recently assigned Bob Ironside to turn a major coal fired generating station project around. Currently at 36 percent construction completion, the project is shifting from an emphasis on civil and structural work to bulk production. Cooperation of the owner, the multi-prime contractors, and strong labor unions is cach vital for performance improvement. The analysis of this project involves: 1) identification of significant external influences on the project organization, 2)...

CASE STUDY: DATA WAREHOUSING AT VOLVO Every Volvo car has hundreds of microprocessors and sensors. Their data is used in diagnosis and repair. It is also captured by Volvo, integrated with the company's CRM, dealership and product data stores, and stored for analysis. This enables Volvo to spot design and construction flaws early, enable proactive correction of faults, and see how its cars respond in accidents. Volvo sells about 400,000 cars per year. Each generates 100–150 kB of data per...
