Answer #1

If top soil of the site is not removed prior to construction it leads to following problem or difficulties:

1. Difficult to compact the soil beneath or inner layers.

2.Problem of vegetation in site , structural damages due to vegetation.

3.Problem of chemical wastes that leads to plant growth in soil causing structural damages.

4.soil is soft, loose leads to low for bearing strength for building.

5. Attainment of gradient and drainage conditions in site is difficult.

6.In longtime it leads to settlement of foundation, building due to loose, highly porous and low strength in nature.

At a borrow site, sandy soil was excavated. The soil had a total unit weight (γt) of 124.3 pcf, a water content (ω) of 12.3%, and a specific gravity (GS) of 2.66. The soil was then dried, the maximum and minimum void ratio tests were performed, and eMAX = 0.564 and eMIN = 0.497 were obtained. Determine the relative density of the soil at the borrow site. Assume a volume of solids of 1 ft3.

It is required to dewater a construction site 80m x 80m. The bottom of the construction will be 1.5 m below the initial water surface elevation of 90 m. Four pumps are to be used in 0.5 m diameter wells at the corners of the site. The transmissivity and the storage coefficient of the aquifer are 1600 m2/day and 0.16, respectively. The site needs to be ready after 1 month of pumping. Determine required pumping rate.
