a) In a switching device, there is a task of designing the Contacts (electrical contacts). For that, you have been asked to choose a material. What properties should you consider in design? What type of material is preferable for such application?

b) What is the difference between the microstructure and the macrostructure of a material?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a)

The properties required for electric contact are

  • good conductivity
  • resistance against corrosion
  • cost friendly

Highly conductive material like silver is the most prefered material as electric contacts as it is also has high resistance against corrosion (inert material) and also cost friendly when compared to other materials which can be used such as gold, platinum etc.

b)

The difference between microstructure and macrostructure of a particle is that, microstructure is the structure of the most minute particle of a material which can be seen by magnification of the material which can include the atoms, nucleus, electrons etc. While microstructure is the structure of material which is visible to us with our naked eyes.

You are designing a safety device in case of a failure of an elevator. You need to design for a 2000-kg elevator that is falling at 4.00 m/s when it first contacts a cushioning spring at the bottom of the elevator shaft. The spring should stop the elevator, compressing 2.00 m as it does so. In addition to the spring, a safety clamp applies a constant 17000-N frictional force to the elevator to help stop it. Part A When the...

TASK 1 a) You are given a 3-terminal device that looks like a NPN transistor, but with a very high gain (beta). You suspect this is a composite device, that is, it is made up of a few components inside the enclosure. Draw a circuit which you propose might be the inner structure of the device. b) Consider the same NPN transistor circuit in part a). Suppose the resistor R1 is placed between the collector and the base, rather the...

You and your team are designing a device that can be used to position a small, plastic object in the region between the plates of a parallel-plate capacitor. A small plastic sphere of mass m = 1.5 x 10-2 kg carries a charge q = +0.202 μC and hangs vertically (along the y direction) from a massless, insulting thread (length l=10.0 cm) between two vertical capacitor plates. When there is no electric field, the object resides at the midpoint between...

select three interfaces, and consider how the teamwork application could be redesigned for each of these types. Use your imagination. How about using a tangible interface or even a drone to help remote students collaborate? Keep in mind that the application is planned to be used by distributed users. So, some interface types such as shareable may not be applicable to the design. Also, consider the “research and design issues” boxes for the interface types you choose. For each interface...

Research is an integral part of all professional fields. Designing a research study can be a complicated task that can be simplified if the appropriate techniques can be identified. This assignment will give you the opportunity to design an experiment, including finding relevant prior research, determining the appropriate sample, data analysis techniques, and discuss the results you hope to see. Working from the topic chosen earlier in the topic selection, you will be designing your own statistical study. In a...

1) You have been asked to develop a walk-way made of glass across a deep canyon as a tourist attraction (think rip-off of the Havasupai Indians walk-way at the Grand Canyon). A supporting steel frame will be built so the glass simply has to support the weight of the morbidly obese Americans walking across it. Your task is to select the glass for the project. Here you want to discuss the potential unique hazards of using glass in this fashion....
