Question

why is the deflection of concrete beams determined for total service load and live loads?

why is the deflection of concrete beams determined for total service load and live loads?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

*design of beam is complex as its has to carry the load safely which is coming over it. it also includes the self weight of the beam apart from service load and live loads.

If the beam deflects in excess this causes visual distress to the users and it damages the other parts of the building.

we cannot compromise the load coming on the beam. Beam need to be designed for all the possible load that might act on it.

if the load considered is less for the design than the actual design, if excess load acts on it than it could cause delection of the beam and leads to failure.

A concrete beam similar to that shown in Figure 13.18 sustains a uniform live load of 1.5 klf and a uniform dead load of 1 klf on a span of 20ft. Determine the layout for a set of No. 3 U-stirrups using the stress method with fy = 40 ksi and f ′ c = 3000 psi. The beam section dimensions are b = 10 in. and d = 23 in.

Since steel in our reinforced concrete bears most of the tensile loads, why is it still important to know the tensile strength of concrete? List one example or type of structure where tensile strength might play a role in the performance or durability of a concrete structure.

Open-web steel joist are to be used for a roof with a live load of 100 psf and a dead load of 35 psf (not including the joist weight) on a span of 26 ft. Joists are 2 ft on center, and deflection is limited to 1/360 of the span under live load only and to 1/240 of the span under total load. Please show work a)Select the lightest possible joist b)Select the shallowest depth possible joist

To estimate the long-term settlement of a footing, a geotechnical engineer uses the total load on the footing calculated by summing the dead load of the structure and the live load (loads imposed by furniture and occupancy). Because each is the sum of many relatively small weights, the engineer assumes that the dead load (X) and the live load (Y) are normally distributed. He collected data from numerous buildings of a similar type and found that the mean and the...

Deign a square tied column to support a service axial dead load P_d of 200 K and a live load P_l of 300 K using concrete f_c^'=4000 psi and bars f_y=60000psi (use steel ratio of about 3% design the ties and check the ACI code requirements) ACI-318

While working with a concrete subcontractor, you were asked to redesign a concrete beam to use No #8 reinforcing bars as the Sub has excess amounts of it. To do so, you need to determine the following: 1) The effective depth of the beam (d) 2) The total depth of the beam (h) 3) The area of tensile reinforcing required and then the number of #8 bars The service load bending moments on the beam are 62 kip-ft for dead...

A rectangular, tension-reinforced beam is to be designed for dead load of 500 lb/ft plus self-weight and service live load of 1200 lb/ft, with a 22 ft simple span. Material strengths will be fy = 60 ksi and fc・= 3 ksi for steel and concrete, respectively. The total beam depth must not exceed 16 in. Calculate the required beam width and tensile steel requirement, using a reinforcement ratio of 0.60 ρ0.005 . Use ACI load factors and strength reduction factors....

Suppose powerplant emissions are linked to morbidity and mortality in humans who live downwind from the powerplant. Suppose in recent years the daily load of emissions into the environment has averaged 4.0 million tons. Also suppose that since the generation of electricity is an important public service the Environmental Protection Agency is reluctant restrict electricity generation. A recent study compiled by the Green Party, an environmental organization, determined that the marginal benefits (in $’s per million tons) of abating emissions...
