Write a report on how the thickness of bracket plate will influence the design on number of bolts in connection.
The bolted connections are fails due to two types of stresses in the bolt.
1.Shear stress in the bolt &
2. Bearing stress in the bolt.
Therefore number of bolts required will be depends on load carried by the connection and the shear area & bearing area of the bolt.
When the thickness of connecting member is increased bearing area of bolt gets increases and hence stresses genrated due to bearing get reduced. As a result number of bolts to avoid bearing failure are less for larger thickness of bracket.
But in case of shearing failure bracket thickness doesn't effect the shear area of bolt and hence it is not influences the number of bolts in connection.
