What all factors an engineer must consider for designing a retaining wall to retain a soil of height 10m? How those factors are different for a cohesionless soil, a cohesive soil and a saturated soil?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

foctors are

i) safety against overturing of wall

ii) required wall height

iii) characteristics of soil to be retained

iv) ground water conditions

v) time and economy of the wall construction

if soil is cohesive soil it dones not drain easily so excess pressure will be on wall sao wall design should be acoording to this excess pressure due to water.

on the other hand cohesion less soil can be drain easily. so we can use drainage system to dain out water ( like weep holes in wall ) so no need to consider water pressure in wall design.

Engineers must consider the breadths of male heads when designing helmets. The company researchers have determined that the population of potential clientele have head breadths that are normally distributed with a mean of 7.1-in and a standard deviation of 1-in. Due to financial constraints, the helmets will be designed to fit all men except those with head breadths that are in the smallest 2.1% or largest 2.1%. In designing the power system for a satellite, an engineer needs to determine the probability of early failure for the batteries powering the system. A random sample of batteries needs to be selected for testing for early failure. Those sampled batteries will all be of the same type, suitable for use in the satellite. The engineer wishes to find the sample size that will provide an estimate of the true proportion of batteries that do not fail too early, π,...
