Assessment 6.0: S&C inspection

Following your inspection of the S&C, produce a short inspection report (min 500 words) detailing your findings. Include in your report, the gauges used to measure S&C components and layouts and explain the use of Non-Destructive Testing techniques applied to S&C layouts.

● In S&C inspection generally plain line gauge with crosslevel is used.

Tight or wide gauge will adversely affect the ride of trains. On occasions tight gauge has
been known to cause severe hunting resulting in emergency stops. Variations in gauge
also trigger rough riding conditions especially in switches and crossings (S&C).

Layout:-

● By use of all methods of Non-destructive testing (NDT), cracks can only be detected.

Ultrasonic Testing (UT) is a non- destructive inspection method that uses high frequency of sound velocity and find the cracks in the various S&C parts.
