Consider a catchment that has a total area of 2.1 acres. Runoff from the entire catchment flows into one pipe inlet. Part of the catchment is a softball field (1.5 ac) and the other part is a set of paved tennis courts (0.6 ac). The softball field has a C value of 0.3 and a time of concentration of 7 minutes, and the paved area has a C value of 0.95 and a time of concentration of 2 minutes.

The IDF curve is given by i =100/(tc+ 10) where i is in in/hr and tc is in minutes. Determine the design storm intensity and flowrate for the following cases:

(a) The usual method based on the entire drainage area contributing to flow.

(b) A modified method that assumes that only the paved tennis courts contribute to flow.

(c) A different modified method that assumes a time of concentration of 2 minutes, and an approximation that the entire tennis court region contributes flow and 2/7 of the softball region contributes flow. Comment on the results and their impact on design. Is it always best to use method (a)? When would method (b) or (c) be better?

The minor drainage system collects and conveys runoff from building infrastructures to minimize nuisance flooding. Sometimes, the downstream turbulence of the hydraulic jump can cause damage and degradation of channel banks. Therefore, drainage design should carry the discharge at nonerosive velocities to minimize the incidents of hydraulic jump and erosion on hydraulic surface. The design and specification of drainage design are conducted based on the Urban Stormwater Management Manual for Malaysia (MSMA 2nd Edition). Lined drains are components of minor...

General data for this problem to be used in the rational method approach and the water balance: The 25-yr IDF curve for a 19,955 m2 watershed area is given by the equation I = A/(B+t) where I is the average rainfall intensity in mm/h, t is the rainfall duration in minutes, A = 22,000 and B = 80. Area has composite runoff coefficient C=0.82 and time of concentration tc= 20 min = 0.3333 h. For the special case of the...

Part I. Indicate whether true or false (T or F). ____ Storm water detention ponds typically are designed to regulate the outflow peak rate at or below a single target value, such as the pre-development (pre-land use change) peak runoff rate for a specified return period event. Detention storage alters the peak but not the volume of the outflow hydrograph. _____ Typical rating curves for weirs are concave upward. Typical rating curves for orifices are concave downward. ____ A sediment...
