Ans) Super critical regime is a condition in hydraulics in which flow velocity is larger then wave velocity. A wave velocity is a velocity at which information travels.Also, when a pebble is thrown into lake , the wave produced and travels outwards,the velocity by which the wave travels is wave velocity.We can also say that the super critical flow is a flow at which depth of channel is less than critical depth and slope of channel is greater than critical slope . Hydraulic jump can only occur in super critical flow
To determine whether the flow is super critical, critical or sub critical , we use dimensionless quantity known as Froude Number (Fr) which can be given by :
Fr = V / (gh)0.5
where, V = velocity of flow
g = acceleration due to gravity
h = depth of flow
When Fr < 1 , flow is sub critical
When Fr = 1 , flow is critical
When Fr > 1, flow is super critical
