Followings are measured for a soil sample:

total mass (gram) = 23.3 gram,

total volume (cm^3) = 12

Then the sample is put in an oven to dry. After drying, followings are given:

oven-dry solid mass (gram) = 21.2

oven-dry solid density (gram/cm^3) = 2.5

Determine the porosity of the soil sample before oven dry.

The bulk density of the fully saturated soil is 1.75 g/cm 3 , and the density of water is 1 g/cm 3 . After a soil sample is drained by gravity, the weight of the soil sample is 800 g. After the sample is oven-dried, the sample weighs 700 g. Assuming water that was drained by gravity is 250 g, Calculate the porosity, specific yield and specific retention of the sample.

An accidental spill results in a total volume Vo = 100 gallons of a toxic liquid chemical entering the upper portion of an unconfined aquifer. The aquifer has a porosity η = 0.25 and a hydraulic conductivity K = 10-3 m/s. The density of the liquid chemical is € ρℓ = 1200 kg/m3 and sorption to solids is negligible. Groundwater samples show that the chemical quickly dissolved in the groundwater, forming a "blob" with a total volume (soil and porewater)...
