Importance of channel depth in harbor layout.

Importance of channel depth in harbor layout.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The channel depth in harbour layout is an important factor. To dispose the huge amount of dredge materials for improving of harbour environment is the main reason of increasing channel depth in harbour, because in sandy seashore sand sedimentation is major problem which causes the reduce of channel depth. Besides, channel depth must be adequate enough for visiting of any types of ships, unless there will be extra transportation cost at the time of lifting of materials.

A rectangular channel with a width of 6.5m and water depth of 1.35m has a channel bed slope of 1 in 900. Determine the discharge when Manning’s roughness coefficient n=0.015. By changing the size of the channel but keeping the same quantity of lining, determine the new dimensions (water depth and width) if it is desired to increase the discharge to a maximum and also calculate percentage increase in discharge

The flow in a very wide rectangular channel tends to a freefall at which the depth is reduced to 0.67 times the normal depth. The channel conveys a specific discharge of 4 m3/s/m and has a bed slope of 10 cm/km. Estimate the distance upstream of the fall where the water depth is 0.9 times the normal depth. Take the Manning coefficient as 0.025 and use the step-by-step (direct step) method.
