According to the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS), the two broad categories of soils are 1) Coarse Grained Soils and 2) Fine Grained Soils.

1) Coarse Grained Soils - classified on the basis of their grain size distribution

These soils are those having 50 percent or more retained on the No. 200 (0.075 m) sieve. They are further subdivided into Gravels and Sand.

2) Fine Grained Soils - (the behavior of these soils is controlled by plasticity) - classified on the basis of their plasticity characteristics

These soils are those having more than 50 percent material passing the No. 200 (0.075 m) sieve.These are further subdivided into Silt and Clay based on their liquid limit and plasticity index.
