In a few sentences at most, describe why a flexural modulus and flexural strength is reported for a ceramic rather than a modulus and ultimate strength.

Answer #1

REASONS FOR FLEXURAL MODULUS AND FLEXURAL STRENGTH REPORTED FOR CERAMIC

(1) For testing of ceramic material 4- point bending load is considered in the laboratory.

(2) It is assumed that the mechanical strength through 4-point bending will be lower than the one measured through 3-point bending.

(3) As we know that probability to find a longer crack will be higher in case of bigger volume.

(4) For getting more reliable mechanical strength .We go for 4-point bending because it is a brittle material and it is very difficult to prepare pure tensile test.

(5) Because of the above reasons flexural modulus and flexural strength is reported for ceramic rather than modulus and ultimate strength .
