Slabs are plate elements forming floors and roof in
buildings which normally
carry uniformly distributed loads. There are different
classifications of slabs.
Common types include one-way slabs, two-way slabs, ribbed slabs,
waffle slabs
and flat slabs. As a structural engineer, critically discuss the
essential criteria on
the choice of a slab system with engineering justifications.

● In choice of type of slab, Economy of construction is obviously an important consideration and is geographically variable.
The design loads, required spans, serviceability requirements, and strength requirements are all important to choose the slab type.
● For beamless slabs like the choice of a flat slab is usually a matter of loading and span.
● If severe deflection limits are imposed, the two-way slab will be most suitable.
● When the longer span is divided shorter span. If the value is greater than 2, then one-way slab is used.
● Ribbed and waffle slabs provide a lighter and stiffer slab. They provide a very good form of construction where slab vibration is an issue, such as laboratories and hospitals.
