The body stores carbohydrates as glycogen in the liver and muscles. When a person stops eating carbohydrates, blood glucose is maintained primarily by using glycogen stored in the liver. Once this is gone, the body will begin catabolizing muscle into glucose. The liver can store 200.0 g glycogen, and exactly 1 g glycogen can be converted to 1 g glucose by the body when necessary. The average body contains 5.000 L of blood and can usually maintain a blood glucose...

Glycogen metabolism is regulated differently in the liver than in skeletal muscle. Explain the differences in regulation and why these differences are necessary based on the functions of glycogen in liver and skeletal muscle.

How many ATP are used for every molecule of glucose in glycolysis? (This question asks for the number of ATP that must first be used, not the net ATP). Animals store glucose in the form of glycogen because ___________________. A. extra energy is released when glucose is stored in glycogen. B. storing glucose in glycogen does not require any energy. C. storing glucose in glycogen lowers the osmolarity of the cell. D. storing glucose in glycogen increases the osmolarity of...

1) If a drugs is used to block the L-type Ca channel in SKELETAL MUSCLES, does it reduce the contraction-efficiency? And WHY. 2) The following statement is FALSE. Why? "The length of a skeletal muscle twitch is about 10-100ms." ***** About the first question If the drug blocks the L-type Ca channels and REDUCES the contraction-efficiency, I seem to understand little Ca will get through. Shouldn't this be enough for in a skeletal muscle? Why?

Polio is a virus that causes muscle paralysis, for example, former President Franklin D Roosevelt used a wheelchair after contracting polio when he was 39. However, this virus NEVER directly affects muscular tissue. (a) How would this virus paralyze skeletal muscle without directly affecting the muscle tissue? (b) This virus never causes paralysis of the heart… why would it not affect the heart if it does affect skeletal muscle?

A patient is a fifteen-year-old male named Alex. Alex’s mother has brought him to see you because she is concerned about his inability to perform any kind of strenuous exercise. During his physical education classes, alex could not keep up with his classmates and often suffered painful muscle cramps if he attempted to exercise. He appeared to be normal if at rest or performing light to moderate exercise. A fasting glucose test showed that Kyle was not hypoglycemic or hyperglycemic....

Which of the following statements is(are) correct? Animals store carbohydrates by building a large molecule, from glucose, called starch.                 B.            Plants store carbohydrates by building a large molecule, from glucose,                                 called glycogen.                 C.            Plants “harness” and store sunlight-energy within the chemical                                 bonds of glucose.                 D.            All of the above are correct.                 E.            None of the above is correct.    The structure (consisting of a fatty-waxy substance) which separates the intracellular...

Blood glucose levels are used to determine the presence of diabetes. Suppose the mean ln (blood glucose) concentration (mg/dl) in 20 to 32 year olds is 5.00 with a standard deviation of 0.45. A study of 100 people in this age group is planned to test whether they have a different level of plasma glucose than the general population. a. If the expected difference is 0.15 ln units, what is the probability of rejecting the null hypothesis using a two...
