calculate the mass in grams of iodine that will react completely with 22.8 grams of aluminum to form aluminum iodide

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Reaction of aluminium with iodine is -

2Al + 3I2 ----> 2AlI3

According to stiochiometric coefficient of the equation 2 mole of aluminium react completely with 3 mole of iodine to form 2 mole of aluminium iodide.

We are given 22.8 grams of aluminium.

Moles = given mass/ molar mass

Al molar mass = 27

moles of Al = 22.8/27 = 0.844

Moles of I2 required to react completey with 0.844 moles of Al is =(3/2)*0.844 =1.266

Molar mass of I2 = 254g/mol

Mass of I2 in 1.266 moles = 1.266*254 =321.564g

So 321.564g of I2 is required to react completely with 22.8 g of Al.
