MTBE stands for methyl-tertiary-butyl-alcohol
It is an oxygenate and was earlier mixed with gasoline in order to improve the octane rating of the gasoline. But it was found to contaminate drinking water and is now not used for this purpose any more.
When MTBE is mixed with an alcohol, like ethanol, a brown sludge is formed which is gel-like in nature owing to the chemical reaction between the two.
This shows that MTBE and ethanol don't mix.
