how many degrees of unsaturation are present in each formula. propose one possible stucture for each compound. ( i just need explanations on the propose the possible structure part)

a. C7H8O

b. C7H11Br

c. C8H9N

Homework Answers

Answer #1

degrees of unsaturation = 1/2*(2C + 2 + N - H - X)

           C = no of carbons

           N = No of Nitrogens

           H = no of hydrogens

           x = no of halogens

a) C7H8O

degrees of unsaturation = 1/2*(2*7+2+0-8-0) = 4

b) C7H11Br

degrees of unsaturation = 1/2*(2*7+2+0-11-1) = 2

c) C8H9N

degrees of unsaturation = 1/2*(2*8+2+1-9-0) = 5

example:

Two degrees of unsaturation is equivalent to 2 double bonds, 1 ring and 1 double bond, 2 rings, or 1 triple bond (2 ? bonds).
