Question

What is the pH of a saturated solution of Zn(OH)2? Ksp = 1.8 x 10^-14

What is the pH of a saturated solution of Zn(OH)2?

Ksp = 1.8 x 10^-14

Homework Answers

Answer #1

In aq solutions

                                 Zn(OH)2(s) Zn+2(aq) + 2HO-(aq)

                    ? Ksp   =[Zn+2][HO-]2

                                  = 4s3

Therefore Molar solubility , s = Cuberoot (Ksp/4)

                                               = Cube root (1.8*10-14/4)

                                                =1.84*10-5 M

Therefore For [HO- ]

                              2s = 2*1.84*10-5 M

                                   = 3.68*10-5

Therefore pOH = -log [HO-]

                          = - log(3.68*10-5)

                          = 4.43

Since pH = 14 -pOH

                 = 14 - 4.43

                 = 9.56
