Would Mordant Yellow Dye 10 interact well with a Teflon-coated magnetic stir bar? Why or why not? Discuss the intermolecular interactions betwee Teflon and the dye.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The teflon is made up of polytetraflouroethane polymer. The teflon is hydrophobic. Thus, it never interact with water or water containg substance. Since, the mordant Yellow Dye is ionic and soluble in water, the dye cannot interact with teflon.

The teflon contains carbon and fluorine only. Due to the strong C-F bonds, the teflon generally unreactive.

The surface of teflon contains Fluorine atoms and pocess negative surface charge. The Mordant Yellow dye is an inoic compound nad forms negative surface charge too. Therefore, teflon and dye doesn't have any intermolecular interactions due to same charge.

Thus, Mordant Yellow Dye 10 doesnot interact well with a Teflon-coated magnetic stir bar.
