Fermentation is a complex chemical process of wine making in which glucose is converted into ethanol and carbon dioxide: C6H12O6 →2C2H5OH + 2CO2 glucose ethanol

Starting with 755.1 g of glucose, what is the maximum amount of ethanol in grams and in liters that can be obtained by this process (density of ethanol = 0.789 g/mL)?

____ g

_____ L

Homework Answers

Answer #1

C6H12O6 →2C2H5OH + 2CO2

Fermentation of one mole of glucose can produce two moles of ethanol, this kind of fermentaion is often called anaerobic fermentation.

lets see how to solve the question step wise,

First,

molecular weiight of glucose = 180.1559 g/mol

weight taken of glucose = 755.1 g

molecular weight of ethanol = 46.07 g/mol

we have seen 1 mole of glucose gives two mole of ethanol

therefore,

1 C6H12O6 = 2 C2H5OH

ethanol produced in gm is 386.192 gm

density p=m/V

V= volume

m= mass

V= m/p

mass = 386.192 gm = 0.386 Kg

p = 0.789 g/mL

Report how much glucose was present before we started fermentation (this is 800 mg/dL for everybody because we just did one representative test). Use this number to calculate the maximum theoretical mass (in grams) of ethanol that we could have produced in the fermentation. Be sure to answer all parts. Magnesium (Mg) is a valuable metal used in alloys, in batteries, and in the manufacture of chemicals. It is obtained mostly from seawater, which contains about 1.30 g of Mg for every kilogram of seawater. Calculate the volume of seawater (in liters) needed to extract 8.92 ×104 tons of Mg. Seawater has a density of 1.03 g/mL. (1 ton = 2000 lb; 1 lb = 453.6 g) Enter your answer in scientific notation.
