Calculate the molar solubility of Ag2CrO4 (Ksp = 1.1 × 10-12) at 25 °C in various aqueous solutions.

A)Calculate the solubility in 0.200 M AgNO3

B)Calculate the solubility in 0.200 M Na2CrO4

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a)

Ag2CrO4 (s) --------------------> 2Ag+ (aq) + CrO4-2(aq)

Ksp = 1.1 x10-12

In presence of 0.2M AgNO3

Ag2CrO4 (s) --------------------> 2Ag+ (aq) + CrO4-2(aq)

   -    0.2 x where x is the solubility in AgNO3 solution

Thus Ksp = [Ag+]2[CrO4-2]

= (0.2)2x = 1.1 x10-12

Thus x = 2.75x10-11 M

Solubility of silver chromate in AgNo3 is 2.75x10-11 M

b) similarly in 0.2M Na2CrO4

Ag2CrO4 (s) --------------------> 2Ag+ (aq) + CrO4-2(aq)

   - 2x 0.2 where x is the solubility in AgNO3 solution

Thus Ksp =1.1 x10-12 = (2x)2 x0.2

Thus x = 1.17 x 10-6 M

solubility of silver chromate in sodium chromate = 1.17x10-6 M
