For which type of acid base titrations would methyl orange and phenolphthalein indicator solutions be best suited?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

In the titration of strong acid and strong base, both methyl orange and Phenaphthalein indicators are used. In this titration the endpoint lies between PH is 4 - 9.

Weak acid verses strong base , the end point lies between PH is 8 - 9. so Phenaphthelein is suitable indicator.

Strong acid verse weak base, the end point lies between PH is 6 - 4. so methyl orange is suitable indicator.

The PH range of phenolphthalein is 8.3 to 10.

The PH range of methyl orange is 3.1 to 4.4.

The flask shown here contains 0.865 g of acid and a few drops of phenolphthalein indicator dissolved in water. The buret contains 0.240 M NaOH. What volume of base is needed to reach the end point of the titration? What is the molar mass of the acid (assuming it is diprotic and that the end point corresponds to the second equivalence point)? The volume needed is 12.0mL.

(i) If 0.200MNaOH is used to titrate 50.0mL of 0.100M hydrochloric acid, it will take 25.0mL of NaOH to reach the equivalence point. (ii) If 0.100MNaOH is used to titrate 50.0mL of 0.100M sulfuric acid (instead of 50.0mL of 0.100M hydrochloric acid), the pH at the equivalence point will be <7.00 because sulfuric acid is diprotic.
