how to find a mass of a solid hydrate?

how to find a mass of a solid hydrate?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

hydrate are ionic compunds, that have a definite amount of water as part of their structure, let's take an example

suppose we want to calculate the molar mass of CuSO4.5H2O

the formula is CuSO4.5H2O as we can see clearly, the formula says that, there are 5 molecules of water ( H2O ) with one mole of CuSO4.

so to calculate the mass of CuSO4.5H2O we just have to add the molar mass of 5 molecules of water ( H2O ) in the molar mass of CuSO4.

molar mass of CuSO4.5H2O = molar mass of CuSO4 + 5 molar mass of H2O = ( 63.5 + 32+ 4 16) + 5 ( 21 + 16)

= (159.5) + (90)

= 249.5 g/mol
