When sythensising 4-bromo- 2-chloroacetanilide from 4- bromoacetanilide, the first step was to dissolve the 4- bromoacetanilide in HCL and acetic acid the mixture is heated gently. why is it important to heat gently? That is, explain why it may be problematic to heat the mixture more aggressively, e.g., above 100

Answer #1

The mixture is gently heated to provide the activation energy necessary for the reaction to occur. When temperature is increased, the rate of the reaction increases. When the temperature is very high such as , the rate of the reaction becomes so high that it becomes uncontrolable and may become an hazard which may lead to an accident. Hence, from safety point of view, it is necessary that the mixture is gently heated. Also as the temperature increases, many side reactions become possible which will decrease the yield of actual product.

Consider a transformation from point A to B in a two-step process. First, the pressure is lowered from 15 MPa at point A to a pressure of 3 MPa, while keeping the volume at 2.3 L by cooling the system. The state reached is labeled C. Then the system is heated at a constant pressure to reach a volume of 6.0 L in the state B. (Assume the system consists of a monatomic ideal gas.) need part B Part B)...

Explain why (S)-2-butanol forms a racemic mixture when it is heated in sulfuric acid. a) When (S)-2-butanol loses water, the asymmetric center in the reactant becomes a planar sp2 carbon. Therefore, the chirality is lost. When sulfuric acid attacks the carbocation, it can attack from either side of the planar carbocation, forming [(R)-2-butan-2-yloxy]sulfonic acid and [(S)-2-butan-2-yloxy]sulfonic acid with equal ease. Which are hydrolysed to form racemic mixture. b) When (S)-2-butanol loses water, the asymmetric center in the reactant becomes a...

These results are not the same ones obtained when using 2% acetic acid and 98% ethyl acetate as the mobile phase? For Reduction of Vanillin aldehyde to Vanillyl alcohol using Nabh4, Aqueous NaOH and HCl If you incorrectly add acid and do not attain a pH of 1, your yield may be lower than it should be as some of your product would not be isolated. Why won’t it be isolated? Notes: This addition of HCl causes four reactions to occur: a. it hydrolyzes the O-B bond in the intermediate and protonates the oxygen atom that was originally the oxygen atom...
