(a) Place the following gases in order of increasing average molecular speed at 25°C: CO, SF6, H2S, Cl2, HI. (Type your answer using the format SF6 for SF6.) slowest ____ < ____ < ____ < ____ < fastest

(b) Calculate the rms speed of CO at 40.0°C.

____ m/s

Answer #1

The average molecular speed is given by :-

a) We see that the average molecular speed is inversely proportional to the molar mass of the gas .So the heavier will move the slowest while the lighter one will move faster.

the increasing order of molar mass is :-

CO < H2S < Cl2 < HI < SF6

So the order of average speed will be :-

SF6< HI < Cl2 < H2S < CO

b) The rms speed of CO at 40.0 0C

R = 8.314 J/Kmol

T = 313.15 K

M = 28.01 g/mol

putting these values we get:-
