What is the difference between homogenous and heterogeneous mixtures, give examples?
A homogeneous mixture is a mixture where the components that make up the mixture are uniformly distributed throughout the mixture. The composition of the mixture is the same throughout. There is only one phase of matter observed in a homogeneous mixture. Example dissolution of sugar and salt in water. Here, there are three different components, viz salt, sugar and water, but it's a uniform mixture and if we take small amount of sample from anysection of the solution will have equal proportion of sugar, salt and water in it. Other examples are air, vinegar, steel, gels like tooth paste etc.
A heterogeneous mixture is a mixture where the components of the mixture are not uniform or have localized regions with different properties. eg. cereal in milk, salad dressing, pebbles in sand etc.
