4 KO2 + 2 H2O + 4 CO2 = 4 KHCO3 + 3 CO2. how many grams of O2 in an hour?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The balanced equation can be written as follows.

4KO2 + 2H2O + 4CO2 = 4KHCO3 + 3O2

Problem: If a person wearing such a mask exhales 0.85 g of CO2 every minute, how many grams of oxygen are produced in 1.0 hour?

The no. of moles of CO2 exhaled = 0.85 g/44 g.mol-1 = 0.019318 mol/min

i.e. In 1 hour, the no. of moles of CO2 exhaled = 0.019318 mol/min * 60 min = 1.1591 mol

Now, the mole ratio CO2 : O2 = 4:3

Therefore, the no. of moles of O2 produced in 1 hour = 1.1591*3/4 = 0.8693 mol

Therefore, the mass of O2 produced in 1 hour = 0.8693 mol * 32 g/mol = 27.818 g
