Please dont tell me just the answer how can you solve this question. What would I need to study to figure it out on my own?
The hybridization associated with the central atom of a molecule in which all the bond angles are 180°is
A. sp^2 B. sp^3 C. sp D. sp^3d^2 E. sp^3d
Ans : C) sp
Since the bond angle is 180o , the molecule must be linear , where the central atom has single or double bonds on its either side with no lone pair of electrons on it.
Example BeCl2 , CO2 etc.
In the case of BeH2 , the s orbital of Be overlaps with the p orbital of Cl on either sides , hence the hybridisation of Be atom will be sp.
In the case of CO2 also , the s and p orbitals of carbon hybridise with p orbitals of Oxygen , so the hybridisation of Carbon is sp and that of oxygens is sp^2.
