2NH3 + ClO4-N2H4 + ClO3-+ H2O In the above redox reaction, use oxidation numbers to identify the element oxidized, the element reduced, the oxidizing agent and the reducing agent.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

2NH3 + ClO4- ---------> N2H4 + ClO3- + H2O

Oxidation no. of Nitrogen in NH3 = -3

Oxidation no. of Chlorine in ClO4- = +7

Oxidation no. of Nitrogen in N2H4 = -2

Oxidation no. of Chlorine in ClO3- = +5

from the above data we can say that there is increase in Oxidation no. of Nitrogen ( -3 to -2 ) and decrease in Oxidation no. of Chlorine ( +7 to +5 ) and there is no chane in oxidation no. of Hydrogen and Oxygen.

So Nitrogen is Oxidised and Chlorine is Reduced.

So

Oxidized element = Nitrogen in NH3

Reduced element = Chlorine in ClO4-

Oxidizing agent = ClO4-

Reducing agent = NH3
