1. How will increasing the column length by a factor of 4 affect resolution?

2. How will increasing column length by a factor of 4 affect separation time?

3. By what factor will resolution be improved when k’B (the capacity factor) is increased from 1 to 2?

4. By what factor will the resolution be improved when α (the selectivity factor) is increased from 1.5 to 2?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a. if the column length is increased by a factor of 4 then the resolution is increased by a factor of 2 . as
R is directly proportional to sqare root of Length of column.

b. if the column legth is increased by factor of 4 then the seperation time is also increased by a factor of four as
N= L/2dp

c.the resolution is related to k'B as

thus on increasing the k'B from 1 to 2 the resolution is decreased by 0.5 factor

4. using above equation when selctivity factor is increased from 1.5 to 2 then after calculating the resolution R is increased by 0.17.
