Why are alkenes more easily oxidizedthank alkynes?

Why are alkenes more easily oxidizedthank alkynes?

Answer #1
  • Triple bonds in alkynes are less reactive than double bonds in alkenes.
  • A triple bond consists of 1 sigma and 2 pi bonds, whereas a double bond consists of 1 sigma and 1 pi bond each.
  • Alkenes and alkynes are nucleophilic centers.Hence attracts electrophiles(Oxidation is the loss of electrons.)
  • Due to the compact electron cloud around C-C bond in alkynes compared to alkenes, the attack of electrophiles is less favorable.Hence alkene is more reactive compared to alkynes.

Because alcohol protons are reasonably acidic and easily undergo exchange, it is important that the base be matched to the appropriate solvent. Explain why it would be virtually impossible to sort out the factors, size of base or stability of alkenes formed, if a reaction were carried out using methanol as the solvent and potassium tert-butoxide as the base

1. There are three different alkenes produced in the dehydration of 3,3 dimethyl-2-butanol. Draw two carbocations that can form during the reaction that lelad to these three alkenes. Remember that rearragment is possible. Indicate which carbocation is most stable and state why. 2. Write IUPAC names for three alkenes which might form during this reaction. which of them is most stable? which of them has the highest heat of hydrogenation?

Synthesis of alkenes via acid catalyzed dehydration of 3,3-dimethyl-2-butanol Phosphoric Acid is not as common in laboratory than Hydrochloric Acid, for example. Why in this reaction HCl would be a poor choice of reagent?  Due to the volatile character of the alkene products, the distillate must sit on a ice-water bath. What is volatility and how it affects the results of the reaction?  Once the alcohol and acid are heated and the reaction distilled, you will obtain a...
