11. Write balanced Net Ionic equations for the following reactions and identify the type of reaction that occurs when:

A)Aqueous nitric acid is mixed with aqueous potassium cyanide.

B)Aqueous barium nitrate is mixed with aqueous lithium hydroxide.

C)Aqueous barium hydroxide is mixed with aqueous sulfuric acid.

D)Zinc metal is mixed with acetic acid, resulting in the formation of zinc ions and hydrogen gas.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a)

HNO3 + KCN --> H+ + CN- in solution will form

H+ + CN- --> HCN(aq)

this is molecular acid formation, the equilbirium is towards HCN, since HCN(aq) > H+ + CN-

b)

Ba(NO3)2 + LiOH --> Ba+2 + NO3- + OH-

Ba2+ + 2OH-(aq) --> Ba(OH)2(s)

this is preciptiation reaciton

c)

Ba(OH)2(s) + H2SO4(aq) --> H2O(l) + BaSO4(s)

this is precipitation reaction + acid/base neutralization + precipitation reaction

net ionic

Ba2+ +2OH-2(s) + 2H+(aq) + SO4-2(aq) --> H2O(l) + BaSO4(s)

c)

Zn(s) + 2CH3COOH(aq) --> Zn+2(aq) + H2(g) + CH3COO-(aq)

this is decomposition reaction, solid forms gases
