Grignard Reaction:
1. it is perfectly acceptable to use wet diethyl ether during the isolation of the product. Why is it unnecessary to use anhydrous diethyl ether at this stage?
6. Why was potassium carbonate used in the distillation of 2-methyl-2-hexanol? Use the curved-arrow notation to draw a mechanism to show what likely would have occurred if the potassium carbonate was omitted
Solution :-
1) Wet diethyl ether is acceptable when the isolation of the product is carrying out because the formation of the final products takes palce by the addition of the H3O+ that is acid reagent therefore it does not affect the product therefore it is acceptable to use wet ether.
2) The potassium carbonate is used in the distillation of the 2-methyl-2-hexanol to maintian the alkalinity of the solution. If the potassium carbonate is not used then alcohol may undergo the dehydration to form the alkene product
following is the possible reaction.
