What impurity(ies) do you think you get rid of in the recrystallization of the product obtained from the synthesis of dimedone?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Synthesis of dimedone can be done by reaction of diethyl malonate and mesityl oxide. In the first step, diethyl malonate in presence of sodium methoxide in MeOH is refluxed, followed by addition of mesityl oxide. In the second and third step, to the product obtained, NaOH is added and again refluxed followed by addition of HCl to obtain the product as a precipitate.

Recrystallization of the product obtained from synthesis, by acetone can remove the unreacted diethyl malonate and final washing by water will remove the traces of acid.

What effect does recrystallization expected to have on the melting point of your product? Briefly explain why. I know that recrystillzation is a method to purify a desired product and depending how well or poor the process was done, it will affecting the melting point range. So if the recrystallization product is done well, then the melting point range will be very small indication that the desired product is near pure and vice versa. However, I can't seem to figure...

2. You have carried out a synthesis reaction and isolated the solid crude product. Scrutiny of its 1H NMR spectrum indicates the presence of an impurity, which you estimate to be approximately 6-8% of the total sample. You decide to purify it via recrystallization and know that you will first need to determine which solvent or solvent pair would be suitable. Describe what you would do and how you would evaluate your results. What properties of the solvent would you...

You have a 175mg sample of Theobromine contaminated with 25mg (200mg total) of an impurity whose solubility in water at both 100 and 25C is half the solubility of Theobromine's. What is the maximum amount of milligrams of pure theobromine you will be able to recover from a recrystallization? What is your recrystallization yield in this case? Theobromine’s solubility in water is 6.6 mg/mL at 100 ºC and 0.5 mg/mL at 25 ºC.
