Question

write a balanced chemical equation assuming that iron was oxidized to iron (lll) Fe + CuCl2

write a balanced chemical equation assuming that iron was oxidized to iron (lll)

Fe + CuCl2

Homework Answers

Answer #1

As Fe lies above Cu in the electrochemical series, so , when Fe reacts with the aqueous solution of Cu2+ (CuCl2), the former will displace the latter and Cu will be depositedand Fe2+ will come into solution.  As a result, the blue color of the solution will disappear. When FeCl2is heated in in air , it is oxidised to FeCl3 and Fe2O3.

Fe + CuCl2 = FeCl2 + Cu

12FeCl2 + 3O2=8FeCl3 +2Fe2O3

The overall balanced equation is

12Fe +12CuCl2 +3O2 = 12Cu + 8FeCl3 + 2Fe2O3
