How much benzoic acid did you lose during the entire recrystallization process? where did the losses most likely occur?

Answer #1

To calulate exact amount of losses of benzoic acid during recrystallization process please use bellow method:

Let's say you started with x g of benzoic acid, and after recrystalization you obtained y g.

Then loss of benzoic acid during recrystalization = (x - y ) g

Reasons for losses during recrystalization:

1) losses resulting from transferring solids from one container to another and leaving a some material behind

2) Any solute has its finite solubility in the recrystallization solvent, even at low temperatures. Hence, prolonged contact of solvent will result in some loss.

3) Too much of solvent used in process also causes poor yield.

4) Too much use of solvent during rinsing will also cause poor yield.

How would I seperate benzophenone from benzoic acid in a under-grad lab? For the lab practical experiment, you will be given a 1.00-g sample of benzophenone contaminated with benzoic acid. Your task is to write your own protocol and complete as much of it as possible, with the objective being to obtain a pure sample of benzophenone in the highest percent recovery. Techniques to consider include the following:  Recrystallization  Extraction  Column chromatography  TLC/mp/bp  Distillation ...
