Question

are all tetrahedral bonds are nonpolar molecules?

are all tetrahedral bonds are nonpolar molecules?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The structure of Tetrahedral molecule.

The tetrahedral molecule will be polar or non polar depends upon the atoms attached to the central atom.

Suppose CH4 -> Here ' C ' is central atom & 4 ' H ' atoms are 109.5 angle , All bond lengths are equal.

There are electnonnegetivity difference between ' e ' & ' H ' but no net polarity. Overall polarity is zero for the molecule, so CH4 is non - polar.

Let's take CA3 -> Here ' C ' is cevtral atom & 3 ' H ' & ' C ' atoms are at angle 109.5o bond angle ,

The four bonds of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) are polar, but the molecule is nonpolar because the bond polarity is canceled by the symmetric tetrahedral shape. When other atoms substitute for some of the Cl atoms, the symmetry is broken and the molecule becomes polar. Use Figure 9.20 to rank the following molecules from the least polar to the most polar: CH2Br2, CF2Cl2, CH2F2, CH2Cl2, CBr4, CF2Br2. (Type your answer using the format NH4 for NH4.)

The angles between the tetrahedral bonds of diamond are the same as the lines connecting the center of a cube at (0, 0 , 0) to four of the eight corners, say (1, 1, 1), (1, -1, -1), (-1, 1, -1) and (-1, -1, 1). (a) Sketch a cube and mark these for corners. (b) Use vector analysis to find the value of the angle.
