Answer #1

n a large building, oil is used in a steam boiler heating system. The combustion of 1.0-lb of oil provides 2.4×107J.

How many kilograms of oil are needed to change 190 kg of water to steam at 100 ∘C?

during conversion of water to steam at 100 deg.c, latent heat has to be supplied and this latent heat= mass of water* heat of vaporization = 190Kg* 2260 Kj/kg = 429400 KJ

1 lb=0.4535 kg of oil produces 2.4*107 J or 2.4*107/1000 Kj or 2.4*104 KJ

2.4*104 KJ is produced from 0.4535 kg of oil

429400 Kj is produced from 429400*0.4535/ (2.4*104)= 8.11 kg

Heat, q, is energy transferred between a system and its surroundings. For a process that involves a temperature change q=m?Cs??T where Cs is specific heat and m is mass. Heat can also be transferred at a constant temperature when there is a change in state. For a process that involves a phase change q=n??H where, n is the number of moles and ?H is the enthalpy of fusion, vaporization, or sublimation. The following table provides the specific heat and enthalpy...
