Experiment Organic Chemistry 1

- When should you use extraction?

- What are the four steps of extraction? What is the purpose of each step?

(We did extraction of caffeine, but question applies to any)

Answer #1

Extraction process is a separation technique which is use to separate a desired compound from its matrix.

There are two types of extraction -

1. Liquid-liquid extraction - this uses two I'm miscible liquid to separate a compound which is soluble in one liquid and not in the other.

2. Solid phase extraction - this uses various chemical reaction to extract the compound.

The steps involved in the extraction usually depends on the nature of the compound that you have chosen.

Usually, the compound is extracted with a suitable solvent, then is dried using an anhydrous salt and finally the solvent is evaporated.

Organic Chemistry Question This question is about an extraction experiment with the compounds biphenyl and 2-chlorobenzoic acid. A student, when conducting this experiment overlooked the instruction "Repeat steps 2 and 3 above two more times with fresh 2 mL portions of sodium bicarbonate solution." Upon conducting TLC analysis, this student found that the final isolated biphenyl was contaminated with some 2-chlorobenzoic acid. Explain, on a molecular level, how and why this student's error led to poor separation. Be specific.

So I did a experiment on extraction of caffeine. Here is the question, If your goal was to isolate as much caffeine from the aqueous layer as poassible, which of the two methods used in this lab would you use and why? We had 2 methods, first method was using 60 mL of CH2Cl2 to extract second method was using 20 mL of CH2Cl2 three times to extract (60 mL total). Now I know that the second method is better,...
