Phosphatidylcholine is a phospholipid in which the phosphate group is esterified to the –OH group of the number 3 carbon on glycerol, and is also esterified to the –OH group of choline, HO-CH2-CH2-N+(CH3)3. What is the net charge on phosphatidyl choline in aqueous solution at pH 7?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Phosphatidylcholine is a molecule having an additional +Ve charged group, choline, at phosphate head group of phosphatidic acid. where, choline is an N,N,N-trimethylethanolammonium cation.

When choline binds to phosphatidic acid, the phosphate group loses one of its negative charges, and makes phosphotidylcholine a neutral molecule so the net charge of phosphatidyl choline is zero.

Positive charge on the choline and a negative charge on the phosphate. For reference attached herewith structure of molecule.

A liter of pH 7.20 phosphate buffer is needed for a certain experiment. The Henderson-Hasselbach equation will be sufficiently accurate for your determination of pH. The pK’s for possibly relevant phosphate species are: H3PO4 ↔ H2PO4- + H+ pK = 2.15 H2PO4- ↔ HPO4-2 + H+ pK = 7.20 HPO4-2 ↔ PO4-3 + H+ pK = 12.4 0.100 Moles of H3PO4 were dissolved in about 800 mL of water, and the pH was adjusted to 7.20 using a standardized pH...
