Pharmacy Question. Please show working :)

Aspirin overdose patient given 1g of activated charcoal/kg bodyweight as antidote, patient weighs 72kg. How many tablets of aspirin 300mg can slurry adsorb if activated charcoal follows Langmuir isotherm. ym= 262mg/g and b=.012

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Given,

Amount of charcoal= 1 g/kg

Weight of patient= 72 kg

Thus,

Total amount of activated charcoal required= 1× 72 = 72 g.

Aspirin content= 300 mg = 0.3 g

Now, from Langmuir isotherm we have ym= 262 mg/g and b= 0.12.

Therefore, adsorbance capacity= 262 mg per g i.e for per gram of solvent only 262 mg of solute is adsorbed.

Therefore, total amount of aspirin required for 70 g = 70× 0.262= 18.34 g

Total tables of aspirin required= Total amount of aspirin/ Content of one tablet.

= 18.34 g/ 0.3 g= 61.133

= 61 tables approximately.
