n a TLC experiment, two compounds showed Rf values of 0.89 and 0.93. How should the experiment be modified to best improve the separation?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The two components shows 0.89 & 0.93 RF values it means both spot are far near with each other that is no proper seperatios

Solution for this

Generally Separation of components is depend on mobile phase if polarity of Components is same the difficult to seperate .that time we can use following point

1 ) If polarity of solvent increase then Also Separation of components not observe So check TLC by reduce polarity of mobile phase

2) If separation not abserve after reduce polarity then change mobile phase system

Generally Ethyl acetate : hexane or MDC : methanol solvent use as mobile phase ... But for separation MDC : Acetone is also prefer to same polarity component separation

In this experiment, you will analyze your sample by TLC by spotting pure benzophenone and your product and eluting with 5:1 hexanes/ethyl acetate. Choose the statement that BEST describes what you should observe for a successful experiment. A) The benzophenone in the standard and reaction samples should travel the farthest and will have the same Rf value. No unreacted benzhydrol should be observed at a lower Rf value. B) The benzophenone in the standard and reaction samples should travel the...

Organic Chemistry Question This question is about an extraction experiment with the compounds biphenyl and 2-chlorobenzoic acid. A student, when conducting this experiment overlooked the instruction "Repeat steps 2 and 3 above two more times with fresh 2 mL portions of sodium bicarbonate solution." Upon conducting TLC analysis, this student found that the final isolated biphenyl was contaminated with some 2-chlorobenzoic acid. Explain, on a molecular level, how and why this student's error led to poor separation. Be specific.
