Why is it necessary to wait until the next lab period to obtain the melting point of benzamide? This has to do with my Recrystallization of Benzamide Lab in Organic Chemistry Lab.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Water is a good solvent for recrystallizing benzamide because benzmide is a polar with hydrogen bonding . You Recrystallizing the benzmide in water and filtering it. The filteration will not leave all water molecules. Some of the Molecules will be present with benzamide which should be eliminated before checking melting point. Otherwise melting point will not appear proper manner. To vaporize the water molecules if you leave it for a day in open atmosphere all water molecules goes up. and you will only compound without water . If you check melting point after a day it wiil be accurate.

Suppose that two organic compounds, M and N, have about the same melting point and that you are given an unknown organic compound, X, which also has the same melting point and is suspected of being identical with either M or N. Describe a procedure for identifying X and state the results you would obtain in each of the following situations: a) X is identical with M. b) X is identical with N. c) X is not identical with either...

I will be given an unknown in an organic chemistry lab. one solid and the other is liquid and I have to identify what is the unknown. I can do IR on liquid unknown only, and the melting point on solid.I need to identify the functional groups I have in both unknowns on the first day how can I do that? I'm not sure where to start and how to go on?

Freezing Point Depression Lab Objective: To use freezing point to determine the molecular weight of an unknown substance. In this lab, we used benzophene as the solvent, which has a freezing point of 48.1 degrees celsius and Kf value of 9.80 degrees C/m. The procedure consisted of measuring out 10 g benzophenone in a test tube and melting the substance in a warm water bath. When melted, we removed the test tube from the bath and allowed it to cool....

Part I So in chemistry lab, we made soap. At some point we had to vacuum filter DI water out of the soap until it was pretty much dry. Why is it necessary to filter out all the DI water? Or if it's not necessary, then why is that? Part II Illustrate (draw) how soap interacts with grease and water. Identify each part of the soap molecule and describe why soap can remove grease from your hands. Part III Fe3+,...
