Briefly, compare and contrast nuclear fission and nuclear fusion.

Briefly, compare and contrast nuclear fission and nuclear fusion.

Answer #1

Fission is used nowadays since it is technological and economically feasible

Fussion is very disscussed due to the high energy, high density requiremenets. Also it is dangerous. It is used in bombs but not in energy production.

Fussion = joining atoms/molecules (releases energy)

Fission = splitting atoms/molecules (releases energy)

Normally, fission does not occur in nature whereas fission occurs in the sun or stars

For fission, we require little energy for starting the process, for fussion, we require very high T which is dangerous

The fuel for fission is normally uranium

the fuel for fussion is normally Hydrogen isotopes

Nuclear Fission If you consider all of the possible fission chains starting with U-235, the average amount of energy released per fission is about 200 MeV. A typical nuclear fission power plant produces 850 Megawatts of electrical power. Assume the plant has an overall efficiency of 30.0% (so 30% of the energy produced by fission is converted into electrical energy). Calculate the total mass of U-235 (in kg) consumed in one year. For informational purposes, if you take the total...
