what is the volume of 16.0g of sulfur dioxide at 20 degrees C and 740 torr pressure?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

6.17L

Explanation

i) Calculate the number of moles of SO2

Number of moles of SO2 = Mass of SO2/Molar mass of SO2

Number of moles of SO2 = 16g/64.07g/mol = 0.24973mol

ii) Calculate volume of SO2 using ideal gas equation

Ideal gas equation is

PV = nRT

P = Pressure, 740 torr ×(1atm/760torr)= 0.9737atm

V = Volume,?

n = number of moles, 0.24973mol

R = gas constant , 0.082057(L atm /mol K)

T = Temperature , 20℃ + 273.15 = 293.15K

V = nRT/P

= 0.24973mol × 0.082057(L atm/mol K) × 293.15K/0.9737atm

= 6.17 L
