determine the entropy change for the displacement reaction represented by the following equation :

Cl2 + PbBr2 -> PbCl2 + Br2

Cl2 = 223.066 delta S
PbBr2 = 182.7 delta S
PbCl2 = 131.3 delta S
Br2 = 152.231 delta S

Answer #1

Answer :

Given stoichiometrically balanced displacement reaction,

Cl2 + PbBr2PbCl 2 + Br2.

Entropy change (ΔSrxn) for any reaction is given as,

ΔSrxn = Σ Sf (products) - Σ Sf (reactants)

Hence for above reaction,

ΔSrxn = [Sf (PbCl 2)+Sf (Br2)] - [Sf (Cl2)+Sf (PbBr2)]

Using given values of entropies of species involved we get,

ΔSrxn = [(+152.231)+(+131.300)] - [(+182.700)+(+223.066)]

ΔSrxn = -122.235 J/K.mole
