Explain how a condenser is used in a distillation. How does this differ from the method used to reflux a mixture?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Reflux and distillation are two chemistry lab techniques which involve boiling and condensing of a solution. Reflux helps complete a reaction and distillation separates components of a mixture.

A condenser is a setup used to condense and the vapor is allowed to condense and flow back into a different flask.Usually it is a glass tube with a continuos circulation of cooled water is around it.

In reflux, the liquid is boiled, but the In reflux, the liquid is boiled, but the vapor is allowed to condense and flow back into the original flask.

A distillation column with a total condenser is separating acetone from ethanol. A distillate concentration of xD = 0.90 mole fraction acetone is desired. Since CMO is valid, L/V = constant. If L/V is equal to 0.8. The distillation column has a partial reboiler that acts as an equilibrium contact. If the bottoms composition is xB = 0.13 mole fraction acetone and the boilup ratio V/B= 1.0, find the vapor composition leaving the second stage above the partial reboiler. a)...

How does the weighted-average cost method differ from the average cost method? A. Each inventory price is weighted by the quantity of units purchased at a given price with the weighted-average cost method. B. An average of the inventory purchase prices is computed without regard to the quantities purchased with the weighted-average cost method. C. The average cost method assumes all inventory items have the same cost, whereas the weighted-average cost method assumes costs differ. D. The average cost method...
