Why are deuterated solvents used for NMR spectroscopy?
What is the purpose of adding TMS to the solvents (therefore in
your sample) for NMR?
Commercial CDCl3 solvent contains a trace amount of CHCl3, at
what chemical shift (ppm) will you see the solvent peak from trace
CHCl3?
(A) If deuterated solvents are not used the spectrum will be dominated by the solvent absorbtion peak(s). As the amount of solvent is always greater than the substance of our intrest the signal corresponding to our substance of intrest will be negligible compared to solvent signal.
(B) TMS is used as internal standard in NMR. It is used to calibrate chemical shifts in NMR spectroscopy.
(C) The signal corresponding to CHCl3 present in CDCl3 is observed at 7.26 ppm.
