Question

At what pressure should a mixture of monochlobenzene and dichlorobenzene entry in a distillation column?

At what pressure should a mixture of monochlobenzene and dichlorobenzene entry in a distillation column?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Benzene column contain monochlorobenzene and dichlorobenzene. This is fed to the chlorobenzene column, which is again a distillation column. This may contain 12 to 20 trays and is operated at a pressure ranging from 3–7 lb/in.2 abs. The temperature in the chlorobenzene column may be between 100 - 120°C. Monochlorobenzene is the overhead distillate product of a purity of 99%. Dichlorobenzene is the bottom residue product of a purity of 97%. The reactions involved in the process are as follows:

1. C6 H6 + Cl2 D &6H5Cl + HCl

2. C6H5Cl + Cl2 D &6H4Cl2 + HCl

Consider a distillation column that receives a feed of 500 kg/min of a mixture of benzene and cyclohexane that is 55 mole % benzene. We wish to design the column so that the distillate has a composition that is 95 mole % benzene and contains 90 % of the benzene fed to the column. Calculate the distillate and bottoms flow rates (in kg/min) and the composition of the bottoms product in mole %.

Gas mixture containing H2S and air from a petroleum distillation column, has its concentration of H2S reduced from 4.0 mol% to 0.1 mol% by scrubbing with a triethanolamine-water solvent in a countercurrent tower, operating at 300 K and at atmospheric pressure. H2S is soluble in such a solution and the equilibrium relation may be taken as Ye = 2.2X. The solvent enters the tower free of H2S and leaves containing 0.015 kmol of H2S/kmol of solvent. The overall coefficient for...
